Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE), also known as Uterine Artery Embolisation (UAE), is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat uterine fibroids.
This non-surgical method allows very effective treatment of fibroids while avoiding a hysterectomy and its associated risks.
Fibroids are very common, benign growths in the uterus, that can cause heavy menstural bleeding, pain, and mass effect on the bladder and bowel.
The procedure is done under X-ray guidance. After the arteries supplying the uterus are carfeully catheterised, tiny particles are injected which block off the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink.
Research has shown that up to 90 percent of women treated by UFE have significant or complete resolution of their symptoms.
